4 Tips to ensure you and your plumber is happy

From fixing leaky pipes to sewage systems, these tradespeople deal with a lot in their day to day jobs.

It’s no wonder that according to the US bureau of labor statistics, that the plumbing job growth rate is projected to surge 12%, much higher than the 7% average growth rate for all occupations.

It’s clear that there’s a growing demand for plumbers, but not a lot of people willing to take on the job.

That’s why helping out your plumber through regular maintenance can make things much easier for them.

In the same way that brushing your teeth keeps your dentist happy, maintaining a solid and efficient plumbing system will make your plumber very happy.

It will also save you some money in the long run and it’s actually pretty easy once you get started.

Here are some of the most common ways of ensuring your utilities are given the care they deserve.

How’s your pressure?

In nearly every home there’s what’s called a Pressure Reducing Valve.

It’s main function is ensure your water pressure is at a usable range which is anywhere between 50-70 psi.

If your Pressure Reducing Valve fails your water pressure could either rise dangerously and cause major damage to your plumbing system, or drop minimalizing flow and volume. Either scenario is undesirable.

But not to worry, you can find pressure gauges at local department stores or online for relatively cheap prices.

These will help you detect early whether or not your water pressure is at a low or high level.

Be reasonable with your garbage disposal

There’s no reason to be throwing chicken bones, egg shells, and foods with high fibres in your garbage disposal.

Be reasonable with the things that you put in your garbage disposal. It will save you from a lot of headaches in the future and most of all, it will prevent you from having to seek professional help.

Make sure you’re slowly placing garbage in the disposal and that you’re running warm water to help break up the foods as they go down.

Also, don’t put in viscous liquids that will later dry up and solidify. Pouring things like grease into your garbage disposal is definitely not recommended.

Clean your Appliances before calling

This includes your bathroom, around your pipes and the area in general.

The last thing you want is to be the customer whose washroom is filled with mold, stains and an aroma powerful enough to incapacitate a grown bear.

So tidy up the toilet, clean the sink and remove any personal products. This will not only make the experience less horrific for the plumber, but it will also make the job easier and quicker.

You also want to make pipes under sinks and toilets more accessible for the plumber. Before calling, simply remove anything around the pipes and make sure they’re open for repair.

Trust me, you’ll save a lot of time by doing this.

Frequently clean and maintain your pipes

Many of the problems presented to plumbers can easily be prevented.

First of all, make sure you’re always keeping an eye out on how much hair goes down your shower drain. You can either by a small hair catcher for very cheap, or simply pull out hair as you go along.

You also want to be regularly cleaning your pipes with liquid pipe cleaner and drain snakes.

To prevent leaks, periodically replace your faucets and showerheads to ensure that they don’t corrode and cause water to escape.

And that’s it!

With these tips you should be able to save you and your plumber from spending a lot of time and unnecessary labour, making your perfect plumbing system much more than a pipe dream.
