Recent chilly temperatures have sparked many Anta Plumbing clients to get in touch with us for our best fall plumbing tips. Memories of last winter's frozen pipes and basement floods fresh in their minds, it's only natural that we should all do what we can to prevent more of the same this year. With all the many plumbing emergencies of winter, Toronto plumbers face the busiest time of the year, and we just want to help our clients prevent as many plumbing nightmares and costly repairs throughout fall and especially winter.
Use the follow seasonal plumbing tips for fall below to prevent plumbing issues this coming winter:
1. Protect your pipes
The best way to prevent pipes from freezing this winter, is to ensure that they are well-insulated. Not sure that your pipes are properly insulated? Get in touch with Anta Plumbing. We'll come inspect it and advise you of any issues.
2. Fix your faucets
If you have leaky faucets, now is the time to fix it. There's never a better time to repair leaks than during fall. Also remember to check the faucets in your utility rooms, and all bathrooms. If there's a leak, fix it before the temperatures drop too low.
3. Service your water heater
Once a year, particularly if you live in an area with hard water, be sure to drain your hot water heater. Best done during fall, draining your water heater can help remove sediments from the tank. If sediments are left to build up inside your hot water heater tank, it can result in rust developing. If your hot water heater is rusted or old, it may be a good time to invest in a new one before the temperatures drop significantly. You don't want to take cold showers during winter while you wait for a new plumbing installation.
4. Pack away your water hoses
During summer, it's so nice to turn to your water hose whenever you want to fill up the pool or wash your car. But in winter, the water remaining inside a hose left connected, can become frozen and expand. The ice can cause the faucet and the connecting pipes to freeze, all the way inside your home. Not only will it damage the relatively inexpensive hose, but it will result in a costly repair bill when your pipes and fixtures are damaged.
While you're at it, also check to ensure that none of your outdoor faucets are leaking or dripping, as it could result in great damage when the freezing temperatures hit.
5. Service your sump
Before the fall chill turns into a cold freeze with rain and snow, be sure to inspect and clean your sump pump and pit. The sump pump can also freeze, which will stop it from functioning as it should. If your sump pump is not working, it can cause water to flood your basement in the event of lots of rain or melting snow.
6. Wrap up your pipes
Are some of your pipes exposed? If you have pipes outside or in drafty areas of your home, you need to have them insulated before the temperatures drop any more. Heat tape is the quickest and most effective solution for protecting your exposed pipes from freezing and bursting.
