Based on the national building code, Ontario’s revised code is set to increase consistency among the other codes used across the Canada, which means that businesses can distribute their products countrywide. At the same time, the new updates to the building code form part of the government’s process for growing a green economy and job creation.
A new bylaw was added to the Ontario building code’s plumbing section. According to CAN CSA B483.1, section 220.127.116.11 on drinking water systems, all drinking water treatment systems or devices should be CAN.CSA-B483.1 certified. Other aspects covered by the code include drainage, firestops, fixtures, licensing, pipes and fittings, potable water, storm drainage, venting and cross connections, to name a few. While a plumbing system looks primitive and simple from the outside, it requires careful design to ensure safety, efficiency and cost-effective operation.
Generally, any licensed plumber can design a plumbing system for a standard freestanding family home without having to submit the drawing to the municipality for approval, provided standards are followed. If a drawing is submitted, he will not be allowed to deviate from the sketch once it is approved. This is for the safety of the occupants of the home and their families. For instance, when it comes to plumbing vents, it is crucial to use the correct installation guidelines and distances to prevent toxic gasses from leaking into the home.
Likewise, part of the plan is to ensure that all newly constructed homes in Ontario use 50% of the energy compared to their pre-2006 counterparts and to improve water conservation and safety. The code applies to both water and septic treatment, in terms of ensuring public safety, increasing energy efficiency and contributing to increased competitiveness in the building sector.
