A new pipe will be fed through the old one which is broken in the process, by means of a hardened steel bursting head, which is attached to a steel cable.

Cured-in-place pipe lining, which involves feeding an inflatable tube through the old pipe is one method of trenchless sewer line replacement method. The tube has a bladder, and when inflated, it hardens against the pipe walls of the old pipe.

Another option is High Density Polyethylene Pipe (HDPE) trenchless replacement. This high quality pipe beats PVC plastic, cast iron or clay pipe, as it resists corrosion. HDPE pipe is melted together at the joint, which makes it stronger than other joints. Therefore, it is able to better withstand pressure, as it is more flexible than other pipe materials.

With this method, a new polyethylene pipe is attached to the back of the bursting head. At the other end of the line, a hydraulic system will be set up, which will pull the cable with the pipe attached, towards it. Once it reaches the exit hole, the connections are made and inspected before the holes are filled in.
