Backwater Valve Installation : Do You Need One?

What is the purpose to install back water valve?

A backwater valve, also called a backflow valve, is a one-way gate that lets household wastewater exit while blocking city sewage from surging back through your drains during heavy rain or sewer overloads. Installing one protects your basement from contaminated floodwater, avoids costly restoration, and safeguards your family’s health.

How to Tell If Your Home Requires a Backwater Valve

ANTA Plumbing has the solution to any of your drain issues, whether it is roots in drains, sewer backup, blocked drain, floor drain, sump pump problems, or whatever plumbing service you require. We offer the following drain services

New construction. Back Water Valve must be installed. Toronto Plumbing Code makes a valve mandatory on any new build that has fixtures below grade.

Existing homes. If any plumbing fixture sits lower than the top of the first upstream sanitary sewer manhole on your street, a valve is required for code compliance and for eligibility under the Toronto Basement Flooding Subsidy Program (up to $1,250 back).

Real-World Examples

  • Home A – All fixtures are above the upstream manhole, so a valve is not required.

  • Home B – Main-floor fixtures are safe, but a planned basement bathroom will be 24 inches below the manhole. Install a valve before finishing the basement.

  • Home C – Existing basement drains are already below manhole level. A valve is essential to prevent sewage surges.

Steps of back water valve

Anta Plumbing’s Four-Step Installation Process

  1. Permit and camera inspection – We scope the line with CCTV to confirm depth and slope.

  2. Excavation and valve placement – A small floor section is opened, the CSA-approved valve is installed, and the line is reconnected.

  3. City inspection and concrete restoration – We coordinate the plumbing inspection, then repour concrete flush to your slab.

  4. Rebate submission – Our team prepares photos, paid invoices, and permits so you can reclaim 80 percent of costs (up to $1,250) through the City’s subsidy.

Unsure about your property’s elevation?

Where back water valve has to be installed and how does it work?

A backwater valve is installed on the main sanitary sewer lateral that runs beneath your basement floor, usually close to the foundation wall where the line exits toward the street. The valve is placed in a short, accessible length of PVC or ABS pipe so an inspector can lift the cover, check the gate and perform maintenance without breaking concrete.

How it works
Inside the housing is a hinged flap with buoyant floats. During normal flow the flap rests open, letting wastewater leave the house. If a storm surge or blocked city sewer forces water back toward the property, rising pressure lifts the flap until it seals against a rubber gasket. This one-way action stops contaminated water from reaching basement fixtures, a critical safeguard for basement flooding in Toronto’s older neighbourhoods.

Code approval and subsidy eligibility

Across Ontario, the only model approved for installation on the main sanitary sewer lateral is the Mainline Fullport Backwater Valve. Choosing this CSA-certified device is mandatory for passing inspection and for claiming the Toronto Basement Flooding Subsidy Program rebate. When a licensed plumber installs the valve with a permit and inspection, homeowners can recover up to 80 percent of the cost (maximum $1,250)

Take a close look at Basement Flooding Subsidy Program running by City of Toronto. To assist homeowners, the City offers owners of single-family, duplex and triplex residential homes a financial subsidy of up to $3,200 per property to install flood protection devices including a back-water valve, sump pump, and pipe severance and capping of the home’s storm sewer or external weeping tile connection.

Sump Pump Essentials for Basement Flooding Protection in Toronto

A sump pump sits in a lined pit at the lowest point of your basement. When rain, snow-melt or rising groundwater fills the pit, the pump automatically ejects the water through a discharge pipe to a safe location outdoors—usually a storm drain or dry well. If your basement floor is below the municipal sewer line, a sump pump is also the only code-compliant way to lift grey- or black-water up to the main sewer.

When installation is critical

  • Homes that have experienced basement flooding or persistent dampness

  • Foundations located at, or below, the local water table

  • Properties applying for the Toronto Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy (up to $1,750 back on a licensed sump-pump install)

Sump Pump Installation

Key installation points

  1. Correct pit size and location—At the footing’s low spot, lined with a perforated basin to collect lateral groundwater.

  2. Dedicated discharge line—Pumped water must exit to a storm system or dry well, never the sanitary sewer, to stay within Toronto Plumbing Code.

  3. Backflow preventer on the discharge—Stops outside water or debris from reversing into the pit and burning out the motor.

  4. Check valve—Prevents pumped water from falling back and short-cycling the unit.

  5. GFCI-protected outlet and battery backup—Keeps the pump running during power outages when downpours are most likely.

Sump Pit Full of Water

Maintenance tips

  • Test the float switch every six months by pouring a bucket of water into the pit.

  • Clear silt or gravel from the basin to maintain pump efficiency.

  • Replace the backup battery every three to five years or as the manufacturer recommends.

By pairing a properly sized sump pump with a CSA-approved backwater valve, you satisfy subsidy requirements, meet Ontario code, and give your Toronto basement the strongest defence against floodwater and sewage backup.
