ANTA PLUMBING

Why Install a Backwater Valve?

The Region has recommended that homeowners assess their needs to determine whether a backwater valve is required. Making the right decision may require time and some skill, and if you’re unsure about it, you may require the assistance of a licensed plumber from Anta Plumbing.

Backwater valves are designed to prevent wastewater from backing up into the basement. Not all homes require a backwater valve, but if it is required, proper installation and ongoing maintenance will be required.

Am I Eligible for a Missisauga Backwater Valve Rebate?

If you have not received a rebate or subsidy through previous basement flooding remediation programs from the Region of Peel and you are able to prove flood-related insurance claims by means of an “Experience Letter” from your insurer, you may be entitled to a rebate.

Ask the plumber to inspect your home’s entire plumbing system, as well as your downspouts. He will look at the following:

Backwater Valve

Connections to your sanitary sewer lines

Some might be sewer connections, but there may be connections from sources of clean water, sump pumps and weeping tiles. Upon request, he may provide a drawing of the various connections.

Weeping tile installation

Weeping tiles

We will check whether the weeping tiles are connected to the lateral sanitary sewer pipe, downstream from the valve, which could force wastewater into your weeping tiles.

Downspouts installations

Downspouts

He will assess whether the all the downspouts are connected to weeping tiles, and whether they can be disconnected, or whether the downspouts or eave troughs should be rerouted in order to cause full disconnection.

Back valve installation

Installation point

He will assess the best place for sanitary back valve installation, which could be inside or right outside the home, in a spot that is as close as possible to the foundation wall.

Recommendation

The plumber will assess whether the recommended valve meets Section 7.4.6.4. of the Ontario Building Code and whether it is a ‘normally open’ type.

4. Once your home has been approved for backwater valve installation, you need to properly disconnect all downspouts. If this is not possible, you will have to sign the Acknowledgement and Release section of the application form.

5. Apply and pay for your building permit from your local municipality.

6. Let ANTA Plumbing licensed Mississauga plumbers to install your backwater valve.

7. Once the backwater valve is installed, ask your municipality’s building inspector to sign off on the building permit and to include the model number of your sanitary backwater valve on the permit.

8. Send the following documents to the subsidy program, making sure that you keep a copy for your own records:

9. Be available for a visual inspection of your downspouts, when the Region calls in response to your application.

10. Once your application has been approved, the Region will mail you a cheque in 6-8 weeks.

Backwater valves offer no guarantee against flooding, but in most cases, are highly effective in protecting your valuable possessions and your property against water damage.
